WHAT WAS ALL THE CONSTRUCTION ABOUT AT ANGEL’S IN THE ATTIC DONATION CENTER ON NEEDMORE LANE???
It is a long story, so keep reading to find out the whole story of early April.

First, the ladies in the former garage portion (the sorting area) have a bit of a problem with rainwater sprinkling on their heads, and on the donations, when they are trying to work. The leak problem was widespread so the garage roof needed to be replaced.

That is the reason for one of the two huge dumpsters and some trucks at the Needmore location a few days ago.

It is the continuing increases in the generosity of the people of Floyd County that require some improvements to make the Donation Center capable of handling the volume, and safely for the volunteers.

The second dumpster is part of a remodel project of the interior. The house floorplan was done originally for, well, a house. There were tight turns which made use of a handtruck impossible. To get to one bedroom, one had to enter through another. For a sorting and storing operation, that simply did not work out well at all. After all, winter clothing is usually donated when spring arrives, so it needs to be stored for a few months until when the need arises. A new, large, rectangular building with a loading dock would be perfect (but costly) so that notion was tabled. A modest amount of widening passages, and eliminating some walls, lo and behold, will result in making it a safer and more efficient operation.

When I attempted to drop off a few boxes of donations last week, the driveway and lawn were filled with dumpsters and trucks. I could not return later as errands in Christiansburg involved picking up some items, and the SUV was filled with donations. So, I wound my way through the maze of vehicles and was amazed to find a few ladies going about their sorting operation despite pounding noises from the roof and interior. They kindly accepted the SUV load, to my relief. Bless them.

Another fixit required is that one of the two single-wide garage doors was nailed to the wall, because of some damage years ago. That crimped the ability for volunteers to move donated items from the mini-barn to the interior. So, a replacement garage door was installed.

Another need is that the back door to the garage, to the furniture barn and other areas, is only a standard door. That is not wide enough for some items, and is an obstacle that requires twisting and turning which is not good for volunteers.

The furniture barn, in the back driveway, is a shed with an open front. Someday, it would be nice to have that remodeled or replaced with a large, weatherproof structure. If anyone has ideas for that, let one of the Angels board members know.
